Shipping cost does not depend solely on the number shown on a scale. A lightweight but bulky parcel takes up space in a van, container or aircraft, so couriers may compare its actual weight with its volumetric weight—also known as dimensional weight—and use the higher figure to determine the applicable rate band.
The calculation is straightforward, but it is accurate only when it uses the dimensions of the finished parcel and the divisor specified for that service. The value 5,000 appears in many examples, but it is not universal and must always be checked against the courier’s price list or contract.

Volumetric weight formula
When length, width and height are expressed in centimetres, the formula is:
Volumetric weight in kg = (length × width × height) ÷ courier divisor
All dimensions must use the same unit. The formula may differ when a courier requires metres rather than centimetres or specifies a conversion ratio in kg/m³. Always check both the required unit and the conversion method before calculating the result.

Example: actual weight is higher
Consider a parcel with the following data:
- length: 25 cm;
- width: 20 cm;
- height: 7 cm;
- divisor: 5,000;
- actual weight: 1.5 kg.
Its volumetric weight is:
(25 × 20 × 7) ÷ 5,000 = 0.7 kg
The comparison is therefore:
- volumetric weight: 0.7 kg;
- actual weight: 1.5 kg;
- reference weight: 1.5 kg.
In this case, actual weight is higher and will be used to determine the weight bracket. If the price list uses whole-kilogram brackets, 1.5 kg will normally fall within the up-to-2 kg bracket, but the exact rounding rule must be checked in the courier’s terms.
Example: volumetric weight is higher
Now take a larger but lighter box:
- length: 40 cm;
- width: 30 cm;
- height: 30 cm;
- divisor: 5,000;
- actual weight: 2 kg.
The volume is 40 × 30 × 30 = 36,000 cm³. Applying the divisor:
36,000 ÷ 5,000 = 7.2 kg
The volumetric weight of 7.2 kg is higher than the actual weight of 2 kg. The reference value is therefore 7.2 kg, before any rounding or placement within the bracket specified by the price list.
How chargeable weight is determined
Use this sequence:
- weigh the closed parcel to obtain its actual weight;
- measure its three maximum external dimensions;
- calculate volumetric weight using the correct divisor;
- compare the two results;
- use the higher value to identify the rate band;
- apply the contract’s rounding rules and any relevant surcharges.

Which volumetric divisor should you check?
